Wellington based multi-instrumentalist Grayson Gilmour has been making eclectic and musically accomplished records for quite a few years now. However his new album Infinite Life! sees the songwriter push towards something larger.
Co-front man of the dormant So So Modern, Gilmour’s technical abilities have always been obvious, but it is the focus and cohesion of songs like ‘Lichtung’ and single ‘Minus Times Infinity’ that reveal his progression from mathematic dance punk to serious composer. The scattering beats of ‘Pareidolia’ create a tension and restraint not seen in earlier works and ‘Blind Carbon Copy’ is a beautiful submarine sprawl, full of subtle crescendos and cavernous reverbs. The lyrical content of standout track ‘Tunnel Vision’ is much more direct and emotive than anything Gilmour has produced in the past - lines like: “I would suck all the poisoned blood from your veins to make you better” sung over a brooding cello soundscape sound heartfelt yet darkly euphoric.
Infinite Life! is a fine record and sees Gilmour continue his rise as one of the most exciting musicians currently active in the country.
