Clear Path Ensemble Announce 'Black Sand' Album Release Shows

Chris Cudby / Thursday 24th April, 2025 10:00AM

Clear Path Ensemble is the outer limits, all-star jazz project led by Te Whanganui-a-Tara multi-instrumentalist / composer / production mastermind Cory Champion (Borrowed CS), a major force in Aotearoa music culture on a variety of fronts. Earning a finalist placing for Te Manu Taki Tautit o te Tau / Best Jazz Artist at the Aotearoa Music Awards for their 2022 long player Solar Eclipse (Soundway and Cosmic Compositions), Clear Path Ensemble are launching their third studio record Black Sand on 15th May, treating ears to the entrancing polyrhythmic flow of lead single 'Cascade d'Ars' (currently only listenable via Bandcamp).

Clear Path Ensemble have announced two gala launch events for the new album this coming June at Tāmaki Makaurau's Double Whammy and the lush setting of Begonia House in the capital, a greenhouse within the Lady Norwood Rose Garden at Wellington Botanic Garden. Preorder the limited vinyl edition of Black Sand HERE and join Champion with sonic voyaging bandmates Louisa Williamson, Daniel Hayles, Johnny Lawrence, and Daniel Ryland (Begonia House show only) at these very special early winter shows....

Press release:

Clear Path Ensemble returns for their first shows of 2025 celebrating the release of their third album Black Sand, with shows in Auckland at Double Whammy on June 6th and Wellington at the prestigious greenhouse Begonia House on June 12th as part of Loemis Festival.

The group, led by Cory Champion and featuring Louisa Williamson, Daniel Hayles, Johnny Lawrence, and Daniel Ryland* (*Begonia House show only), riffs on jazz-fusion in the mode of Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Azymuth while folding elements of minimalism, ambient, techno and broken beat into their borderless, highly exploratory soundworld.

After previous releases with Soundway and Cosmic Compositions, their new album Black Sand will be available digitally from May 15 and on vinyl privately pressed in a limited run, available early June.
