Lake South Announces Album Release Tour + Unveils Video For 'Auckland (So Close To Nothing At All)'

Chris Cudby / Thursday 17th April, 2025 10:22AM

Sonic surveyor of Aotearoa's psychogeographic landscapes, Lake South and band will soon be launching their new album We lived our lives on top of this, lighting up our stormy pre-Easter Thursday with news of a six-date nationwide winter release tour. Written during the three year period following the birth of his first child, we've already heard the impassioned and unsparing lead single from the Pōneke ElectricUTOPIA artist's forthcoming record, 'Auckland (so close to nothing at all)' — "But I’m everyday alone here / With the liberty and the lying / It hits tight round the neck / You’re paying too much in rent" — and today we're treated to an aptly widescreen accompanying video.

Self-directed by Lake South and filmed by Bill Bycroft, the bespectacled artist and gold-garbed pal (aka Achilles) explore the empty avenues and alleyways of Tāmaki Makaurau's urban and suburban zones, covering impressive territory during their late night lyrical postering mission. Join the pair on their adventure below, look forward to the launch of We lived our lives on top of this on 6th June, and go catch Lake South with bandmates Theo Sekeris (Ras Judah, Rubita), Eddie Crawshaw (Sheep Dog & Wolf, Bonaparte), and Penelope Esplin (French for Rabbits, Eigenface) bringing the magic to a stage near you (Lake South is also playing a free outdoor acoustic show at Left Bank Arcade this evening)...

Press release:

ElectricUTOPIA artist Lake South takes the best of the Aotearoa New Zealand songwriting tradition and infuses it with raw emotion and electronics. Defiant, DIY, indie anthems for people who give a damn.

The band has released 3 critically acclaimed albums, with Graham Reid calling Lake an "electro-folk postcard poet of his doubting generation". After a 4 year hiatus, Lake South are set to return with their newest collection 'We lived our lives on top of this' in June 2025.

The album was written in the pockets of free time in the 3 years since the birth of Lake's first child. Immense joy, white nights, the mourning of a life lived lonely, and the delicate embrace of a love without limit.

The current line-up features Theo Sekeris (Ras Judah, Rubita) on bass, Eddie Crawshaw (Sheep Dog & Wolf, Bonaparte) on drums, and Penelope Esplin (French for Rabbits, Eigenface) on harmonies and synths.

A Lake South song can make you run down an empty street at dusk, screaming your heart out for a better future. Prepare for a live show that hits deep.
