Groundbreaking Wellington post-punk band Vietnam will play the capital’s Fringe Festival to celebrate the re-release of their debut EP on Jayrem Records – thirty years after the first vinyl edition was issued.
Formed in Wainuiomata in 1982, the four-piece had a brief but influential career touring in New Zealand before disbanding. Known for a brooding, unique sound and lyrical intensity, their eponymously titled debut has long been considered a lost Kiwi classic that is keenly sought by collectors – so much so that Spain-based record company B.F.E. Records has spearheaded a re-issue, combining unreleased demos with the original recordings.
Joining Vietnam on the night are two bands comprising members of Jayrem acts from the 80s Wellington Indie Scene.
'Die Glocke' features Eugene Pope from Flesh D-Vice, Dragan Stojanovic (Axe Men & Vas Deferens), Rob Barnett (D.I.Y.), and John Savage (Jungle Mice).
'Dead Simple', features Glen Wilson from Unrestful Movements, along with Jimmy Kirkpatrick and Lara Wilson. Dead Simple play Unrestful Movements originals as well as new songs from the current lineup with all the urgency, power and diversity the band is known for.
The Fringe Festival show is for those wishing to travel briefly back in time to the mid 80’s (who don’t mind that the cold warehouse has been replaced by comfy chairs and boutique beers) to enjoy some of the local sounds and stories of the post-punk/new wave era (and still be home in time for the Goodnight Kiwi).
