Full bio below:

Tāmaki Makaurau-based musician Paul Cathro grew up in Dunedin, where he was involved in bands such as Biff Merchants & Alizarin Lizard before starting Ha the Unclear with his brother Michael.

Though he is best known for his work with Ha the Unclear, Cathro has regularly released music as a solo artist. His second full length album ‘Catapult’, (first album Head First Into Solid Ground released in 2016) is a collection of 11 quirky power pop anthems. Two singles have been released to date: Distance in November 2024 (which made the 95bfm top 10 twice) and No Life on Mars in March 2025.

Paul Cathro is joined by Joshua Worthington-Church (Princess Chelsea, Exploding Rainbow Orchestra) on bass, Charmain Keay (APO) on violin and Jamie Hannah (Spawts, Two Cartoons) on drums.

Together, they deliver a high-energy sound that blends high energy guitar driven power pop

“ Paul Cathro comes across like a Kiwi Jarvis Cocker; nerdy, awkward, anxious, overthinking, and capable of delivering some of the most skewed lyrical wonders. The music is also like a thrillingly adventurous mix of Pulp and another UK band Squeeze…” PopLIb.

'Catapult' was engineered at Mezzanine Studios by Edward Castello, mixed by Andrew Straight, and mastered by William Bowden and will be released in June 2025.
