Listen To Serebii's New Album 'Dime'
Collaborator with fellow Aotearoa multi-instrumentalist / singer Arjuna Oakes (now making waves in the UK) on 2022's Final Days, Serebii aka Callum Mower's musical vision feels masterful on his second solo album Dime, out in the world today via LA imprint Innovative Leisure. That collaborative streak is present again on a smattering of Dime's ten tracks — the neo-soul elegance of recent single 'Verrans Corner' (which captured my own heart as a former Beach Haven / Birkdale dweller) features guitarist Leith Sye Towers (Marlins Dreaming), gently pulsing closer 'Assembly' spotlights vocals by Carla Camilleri (the artist formerly known as CC(TV)), lush pastoral opener 'Lungs' features Mystery Waitress tunesmith Tessa De Lyon, and Mower's grandfather Allan Watkins reads "some of his writing he’d done about adolescence" on spoken word synth-scape 'The Randan'. These special guests feel like distinct creative choices to fit the needs of the songs rather than ringers, as Serebii's instrumental, vocal and compositional talents are world class as is.
Written during a contemplative period of deep focus, where the artist "did little besides eat, sleep, and make music", Dime unfolds like a lovingly crafted musical prism — refracting different blends of sonic colour depending on which angle it is viewed. Tropicália and soul-jazz rhythms, psych-folk guitar, stately piano, and watercolour-like strings / synth washes are all elements of Dime's vividly realised universe of sound. Treat your ears to Dime and catch Serebii with friends, playing a triple date release tour in April brought to you by 100% Good...
"For two months I chased a bunch of humble sparks around a room trying to squeeze them into something formulaic, like a glass jar.
It has been over a year since writing these songs in my home studio in Titirangi. Some of the tracks took weeks to finish while others a few hours. At last.. I am incredibly excited to share ‘Dime’ with you".
