Listen To TeamSquad's New 'Apocalipsync' EP
TeamSquad are the Whāingaroa Raglan-based team of Ruth and Kane Power on vocals / keys and drums, with Odhran Devlin holding down the low end on bass. Almost literally a power trio (we reckon two-thirds is near enough), TeamSquad bust out a body-moving blend of sci-fi jazz-funk, neo-soul grooves and more than a touch of disco heat on their new four song Apocalipsync EP — citing such titans of the form as Prince, Chaka Khan and Patrice Rushen. Which isn't say they're not engaged with our present moment, the epic-scale title track ponders the mental health impact of everyday doomscroll culture and 'Violet' demands a matriarchal society, while the swirling arpeggios and soaring leads of 'Metallic' encourage listeners to embrace their own glamour and get on the dancefloor.
Produced with Lora Thompson at The Porch studio in Kirikiriroa, mixed by Evan Pope at Studio 11b and mastered in Naarm Melbourne by Andrei Eremin (Hiatus Kaiyote, Sampa the Great, Tash Sultana), TeamSquad are joining forces with fellow synth-slingers Brother Sister this Saturday for a release rager at The Yard Café. Hit play on Apocalipsync and dress to sweat...
"Usually it’s Kane and I, over many late nights playing with synth sounds. We know when we’ve found something good, then the synth leads the way, it knows what it wants to do". — Ruth Power
