Reb Fountain Shares New Album 'How Love Bends' + Video 'He Commands You To Jump Into The Sea'
Her new album adorned with stark portrait artwork by Liam Gerrard (of The Veils), Warhol-like and stripped of colour, it's safe to say Reb Fountain is one of Aotearoa's superstar songwriters of our turbulent current era. Immaculately produced by Dave Khan (who also contributes guitar / synths on the record) and Simon Gooding at Roundhead Studios, How Love Bends arrives with a gravitas befitting the multi-award winning artist, yet there's ample room for play and to stretch out into fresh sonic realms. The piano-led chamber-pop of 'City' and 'Over Joy/ed' shifts into slo-mo glam-rock zones on 'Drake', 'Ring Ring' has a scorched Portishead-like trip-hop quality (also present in 'Nothing Like'), recent single 'Forever' weaves together pastoral psych-folk lushness with dramatic bluesy strut, and there's new age synth elements bubbling through the majestic title track — all reflecting upon "the transformative nature of love in all its forms".
Directed by Fountain's daughter and regular collaborator Lola Fountain-Best, and made with support from NZ On Air, the video for new spoken word showcase 'He Commands You To Jump Into The Sea' is a short film setting the artist's impassioned beat poetry within the coastal sculpture trail of Waiheke Island (and beyond). Recorded with bandmates Khan, Karin Canzek and Earl Robertson, you can order Fountain's long player on vinyl LP (plus bonus 'How Bizarre' / 'The Gambler' 7") / compact disc HERE, and go catch the songwriting luminary with full band touring nationwide in April and May — joined for all dates by special guest Pete Moriarity...
"The way in which I perceive the world and myself changes over time to the degree to which I am prepared to allow it to change. That’s so f-ing liberating".
