Listen to Transistors' New Album 'Everything Will Never Happen Again'

Chris Cudby / Thursday 6th March, 2025 11:24AM

Featured in our Saturday roundup and more than deserving a spotlight of its own, Everything Will Never Happen Again is the first new album in a staggering twelve years from Rangiora's garage punk champions Transistors. The three-piece sound fresh as a daisy as they rip through a generous fourteen tracks, sharing a love for crunchy power pop hooks and erudite wordplay with their hometown's Best Bets — which makes a tonne of sense as two-thirds of Transistors are in both groups.

Casting their lyrical net into Canterbury's psychogeographical landscape, recent single 'Seagull' makes this listener consider the inner life of a resident at Ōtautahi's infamous Seagull Pit, singing "I'll always be around / To remind you that I'm always around," while highlighted newie 'Country Music' reclaims the string-twanging realm of alt-country back for mutant punks (doing pioneers Meat Puppets proud), righteously announcing "This may come to you as some surprise: this is what country music sounds like!" Dead mall enthusiasts can bask in the reverberant grandeur of 'Ogden City Mall', 'Man I Was Hungry' documents a mad case of the munchies, while 'High Hopes' sensibly throws ice on rock 'n' roll fantasies, sporting the line "Give up on the dream / Before the dream gives up on you".

The album was recorded in Mānuka Bay with Joe Sampson and mixed / mastered by Brian Feary, another world class winner from Melted Ice Cream, who — unless you've been napping Rip Van Winkle-style — you'll already know their output has been consistently phenomenal. Dive inside Transistors high-energy world, smash play on the new video for 'Country Music' and go catch them in Tāmaki Makaurau next Sunday reuniting with Tokyo's Guitar Wolf at Whammy Bar, plus playing the night before at Loons in Lyttelton supporting The D4...
