Listen To Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory's New Album
US multi-talent Sharon Van Etten remains unassailable on her new record, bringing her band into the songwriting / compositional fold for the first time with consistently majestic results on Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory. Sounding freed from the emotional weight of 2022's We've Been Going About This All Wrong, SVE still confronts heavy themes permeating our contemporary grimdark reality, but with a reenergised, soaring and playful spirit in this new aspect. The rock heft of 2019's Remind Me Tomorrow is back, infused with dream-pop luminosity and cinematic pulsing synths. Indeed, celestial single 'Afterlife' could double as closing credits to a film from your dreams, while the elegant Blue Nile shimmer of 'Trouble' feels akin to recent work by Aotearoa's own Ebony Lamb.
Sharon Van Etten asks "Do you believe in compassion for enemies / Who is to blame when it falls to decay?" on the motorik 'Somethin' Ain't Right', huge Skeptics-like grooves chug onwards while she intones "Why can't you see it from the other side? / We must imagine what it must be like" on album standout 'Southern Life (What It Must Be Like)', 'I Can’t Imagine (Why You Feel This Way)' burrows deep into gritty VHS punk-disco-funk done right, and there's even nimble new wavey guitar-pop on 'Indio'.
Conceived via group jams with bandmates Jorge Balbi, Devra Hoff and Teeny Lieberson, and produced by Marta Salogni, Sharon Van Etten fans (including of course John Campbell) and newcomers to her world ought to be stoked with Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory. You can order the album on vinyl LP and compact disc HERE, look forward to a new video for 'Idiot Box' out later today, and make a wish for local SVE tour dates...
"For the first time in my life I asked the band if we could just jam. Words that have never come out of my mouth – ever! But I loved all the sounds we were getting. I was curious - what would happen?
Sometimes it's exciting, sometimes it's scary, sometimes you feel stuck. It's like every day feels a little different – just being at peace with whatever you're feeling and whoever you are and how you relate to people in that moment. If I can just keep a sense of openness while knowing that my feelings change every day, that is all I can do right now. That and try to be the best person I can be while letting other people be who they are and not taking it personally and just being. I'm not there, but I'm trying to be there every day."
