Simon Joyner (USA) Touring Aotearoa New Zealand This Summer
An esteemed figure in Americana music, Simon Joyner's pioneering influence ripples through works by Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Kevin Morby, Gillian Welch and Beck — who once named the Omaha, Nebraska songwriter in his personal top ten list for Rolling Stone. With more than three decades of releases under his belt, spanning nineteen albums (iconic BBC DJ John Peel notably hailed 1994's The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll), plus numerous compilation contributions and split single collaborations (including a mid-nineties release with The Mountain Goats), Joyner is venturing to the southern hemisphere this coming February, playing a nationwide summer tour alongside a selection of Aotearoa's very finest.
Touring his new album Coyote Butterfly, Joyner is performing alongside legendary Nocturnal Projections / This Kind of Punishment co-founder Peter Jefferies at Pōneke's Vogelmorn Bowling Club, and headlining Kirikiriroa's Last Place with support from NZ-based US folk artist Brandon De La Cruz (both shows brought to you by Home Alone) — nestled amidst appearances at The Second Aotearoa International Festival Of Secret Sounds in Tāmaki Makaurau and Port Noise Festival 2025 in Ōhinehou Lyttelton (lineup details HERE). Press release:
In February and March, revered American singer-songwriter Simon Joyner is heading to New Zealand for a series of intimate shows.
Joyner, who has released albums on independent labels since the early 90’s is widely regarded as one of the great songwriters of our generation. Gillian Welch calls him her favorite poet and Kevin Morby and Conor Oberst both claim him as a major influence. Despite being a songwriter’s songwriter, Joyner has flown mostly under the radar for thirty years, an underground artist who tours infrequently but has over 50 releases to his name, including 19 albums. He’s here in New Zealand, playing a handful of shows in support of the release of his newest album, Coyote Butterfly.
In Wellington he will be performing alongside New Zealand underground icon Peter Jefferies. He will also be stopping in Hamilton to play at Last Place with support from Brandon de la Cruz (Portland, US), Auckland (for the Second Aotearoa International Festival of Secret Sounds) and Lyttleton, where he ends the run at Port Noise Festival.
