Miles Calder Unveils New Single 'Keeping Up'

Miles Calder compliments our suddenly scorching summer in Aotearoa with the dazed psych-rock grooves of his first single in two years 'Keeping Up', the lead tune unveiled from the Pōneke songwriter's forthcoming new EP. Themed around the relatable notion of "hanging in there", 'Keeping Up' is Calder's second song he's recorded with producer Samuel Flynn Scott (The Phoenix Foundation, Moniker), emerging from full band jams laid down at The Surgery, with studio maestro Lee Prebble on engineering duties.

Emanating cosmic energy not dissimilar in feel to V.-era Wooden Shjips or even local fellow travellers Te Huhu, bubbling synths intertwine with locked-in motorik rhythms and freewheeling guitar drones, as Calder's deeply reverbed vocals take flight above. "Started as a strange jam idea during lockdown, ‘Keeping Up’ is about hanging in there... Shrug off your day-to-day angst with some "badabaa" refrains. Sam suggested we simplify the bones of it, and jam together over the same looped chords to find the perfect murk and weirdness. The live full band jam was recorded, mixed and mastered so perfectly by Lee Prebble at The Surgery".
