Soft Plastics Return With Single / Video 'Drown!'
Finalists for the Best Independent Debut Award with their standout 2023 long player Saturn Return, Te Whanganui-a-Tara's Soft Plastics reemerge before the end of year bell rings, today unveiling new single and video 'Drown!' Sophie Scott-Maunder, Jonathan Shirley and Laura Robinson step back into the spotlight with a smouldering slice of fuzz-rock existential dread, capturing in song that oppressive, inertia-sapping feeling when you know life is leading you nowhere but down the drain.
Directed by Soft Plastics drummer Laura Robinson, made with support from NZ On Air and filmed within the capital's St Gerard’s Monastery, the artfully designed accompanying video radiates luxurious decay. Scott-Maunder relives past social glories whilst meandering around empty hallways, like a figure lost in time...
"It’s that feeling of sinking into life's monotony, weighed down by dissatisfaction and a growing sense of aimlessness. It's about the fear of taking the leap to reignite a spark, even when the desire for change becomes overwhelming.
I wanted the location to feel like we were partying somewhere in Italy. I’m also attracted to period pieces where the architecture isn’t directly from that era. We worked with an art department team to create a ‘spaghetti-sleaze’ makeover". - Sophie Scott-Maunder
'Drown!' is out today on major streaming platforms.
