FĒI LÍN Unveils Single / Video 'You Are The Mirror'
FĒI LÍN aka Yazmin Todd sounds radiant on 'You Are The Mirror', the Whitianga-based (with roots in Ōtautahi and Singapore) artist's new jazz-funk-soul groover, out today with an equally snazzy clip made with support from NZ On Air's New Music Pan-Asian funding. Uplifting in spirit and immaculately crafted with studio collaborator Christian Tjandrawinata, who also directed the equine-loving video, the song took shape during FĒI LÍN's week-long residency at Tāmaki Makaurau's Big Fan hub, following a particularly inspiring morning listening to Sade — laid down with Adam Tobeck "for rhythm and groove", keyboardist Ben Fernandez and Christian Mausia on trumpet. Filmed along the Kūaotunu coastline and co-starring the artist's own horses Pedro, Pikowai, and Leo, boogie along with 'You Are The Mirror' below and go catch FĒI LÍN with friends at The Monkey House Theatre just before Christmas...
"A lot of the lyrics were pulled from a poem I had written after seeing one of my best friends. We had just shared a wonderful afternoon, just sitting there yacking away and sharing ponderings of life. We were so immersed in our conversation that we hadn't realised that the sun had gone down. The poem was reflecting on my gratitude for friendship, having someone to sit in the dark with and laugh. Our friends are the best mirrors to what we forget to see in ourselves and that we offer to one another the gift of understanding. I wouldn't be anywhere without the support of my friendships.
I know it's cheesy, but I love that C. S. Lewis quote — 'a friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and sings it back to you when you have forgotten the words.' Basically says it all for me".
