Helmed by Aotearoa songwriting luminary Finn Andrews, it's been two decades since The Veils captured the imagination of listeners around the globe with their debut album The Runaway Found, and now fans avidly await the project's seventh studio record Asphodels. Alluding to the realm in Greek mythology where "souls of the ordinary dead reside," we've already been treated to lead singles 'The Ladder' and 'O Fortune Teller' (experience both below), poetic appetisers for the full record out on 24th January via Banished From The Universe and V2 Records. Based between London and NZ, Andrews has announced a full-scale nationwide tour this coming March and April in celebration of Asphodels, following an extensive run of headline events across Europe and the UK in early 2025.

These local shows are in addition to The Veils' forthcoming performance with NZTrio at WOMAD Aotearoa 2025 and an appearance at Wānaka's Festival Of Colour. Crystallised in collaboration with with string arranger Victoria Kelly, be sure to preorder Asphodels on vinyl LP and compact disc HERE, and don't miss the magic and gothic drama of The Veils live this coming spring...

"Following our mid-winter European tour, we are overjoyed to be thawing ourselves in the warm glow of Aotearoa once more. This whole album was written and recorded here, so bringing these songs home will be a very special feeling indeed.

I feel as though this album is the end result of a now disconcertingly long career in music. I think after your 7th album, much like turning 40, you should really just stop counting. I’ve learned a lot along the way, which I suppose is the whole point, and I’ve really distilled it all into these 9 songs". - Finn Andrews

Press release:

Banished Music are proud to present the return of globally-beloved indie heroes The Veils, touring New Zealand in March and April 2025 in celebration of their seventh studio album, ‘Asphodels’. Featuring the singles The Ladder and O Fortune Teller, the album is due for release on January 24th, 2025 on V2 Records / Banished From The Universe.

The tour includes a one-off performance with ‘New Zealand’s most indispensable ensemble’ NZTrio at WOMAD, as well as festival performances at Wanaka’s Festival of Colour and the Dunedin Arts Festival, and headline shows in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Asphodels was recorded live to tape over five days at Roundhead Studios in Aotearoa New Zealand, in the spring of 2023. The album takes its name from the Ancient Greek flower of the Underworld, and lyrically, Andrews draws more from poets like Federico García Lorca, Ted Hughes or Louis MacNeice than he does from the well of more traditional rock and roll songwriters. The collaboration between Andrews and string arranger Victoria Kelly is also a central aspect to the record, and as with the band’s previous album …And Out Of The Void Came Love, Kelly plays a large role in bringing the songs to life.
