One of the most singular voices in what has shaped up to be a new golden era for Aotearoa songwriters, Nadia Reid revealed late last week album number four Enter Now Brightness is on the way, announced with fresh ballad 'Baby Bright'. Delicate piano, encouraging horns and gospel-like choir / organ provide a soulful setting for Reid's firsthand reflections, considering the changes in her own outlook since becoming a new mother (Reid has given birth to two daughters since her 2020 album Out of My Province).

Directed by Sunbed (Oscar Keys and Ezra Simons) and made with support from NZ On Air, the video for 'Baby Bright' poetically portrays the deep bond between mother and daughter — played by Robyn Malcolm and DeeDee Comet, travelling together through windswept Aotearoa rural expanses towards destinations unknown. Now based in the UK, the Port Chalmers luminary will be returning to her homeland this spring for a nationwide tour, before Enter Now Brightness launches in full on 7th February via Reid's own boutique imprint Slow Time Records. "When my first daughter was born she had these massive bright blue eyes - she still does. And when she was born I did have this really intense drive to create - I felt very invigorated. Everything felt sharper and accessible and it all came to the surface.

I think for me, becoming a mother brought all of [the issues of] the inner child and all of my own mothering right back up to the surface,” she says. “A lot of women say that when they’ve had babies they’ve said to their own mums ‘Thank you so much!’ because they have this revelation of what their mother’s sacrificed for them. And I guess I had that in a different way."

'Baby Bright' is out now on major streaming services via Slow Time Records.
