Ryder The Eagle (Fr) Debut New Zealand Shows Announced

Chris Cudby / Friday 4th October, 2024 12:09PM

Winner of Aotearoa's prestigious Taite Music Prize, Princess Chelsea now returns home from her global adventures proselytising the singular talents of Ryder The Eagle. Inspired by the Mexico City-based French songwriter's romantic universe of sound, Princess Chelsea has donned a promotor's crown — co-presenting two very special headline events at Tāmaki Makaurau's new Double Whammy and Waiheke Island's Artworks Theatre, in collaboration with Strange News and Susie Says!

Crooning "do I need love or do I need therapy" on recent single 'What Is Love', Ryder The Eagle has released two studio albums during the past two years — constructing cathedrals for heartbreak on Megachurch (2023), and slow-dancing for one on new long player Autotango. An intersection of impassioned sophisti-pop, new wave / romantica, smouldering blues-rock and Blue Nile-esque dream-pop, you can experience the majesty of Ryder The Eagle this spring. He'll be supported at Double Whammy by Pony Baby (Jazmine Mary and ARAHI) and Créme Jéan, while his Waiheke Island all-ages show features the legendary Teen Wolf (Princess Chelsea, Brad Fafejta, Vincent Lum) and Waiheke High School band Lemoncholi. Prepare to fall in love with music all over again at the following dates...

"This is the first, and likely the last time I will promote a show for somebody else's music, but people need to see this man perform. Leonard Cohen meets Alex Cameron, with a magnetic stage presence and total commitment to live performance. For fans of Alan Vega and Suicide, Sufjan Stevens, and general romance." - Princess Chelsea

Press release:

Having toured the world relentlessly over the past few years, Princess Chelsea has returned home with a singular mission, to help the good people of Auckland to fall in love with one of the greatest showmen the world has ever known.

Listen, maybe you've never heard of Ryder the Eagle, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be clammy handed and palpitating at the news that the French chanteur and travelling heartbreaker is en route to our fair city for two life-changing shows this month, set to play a transformed Double Whammy cabaret on Wednesday 23 October, and an all-ages evening at Waihekes Artworks Theatre on Thursday 24 October.

A DIY hero, fallen Romeo, karaoke weirdo, the Mexico based French balladeer is everything (and nothing) you could expect from a soft-rock divorced singer chasing dreams at your local dive bar. With lo-fi synthy soundscapes, lyric melodies, poetic songwriting and cathartic one-of-a-kind performances, Ryder The Eagle tells his history with love more than his love stories, coating romantic despair with a chiselled wit thatll take you right to a Kaurismaki movie soundtracked by a caffeine driven Leonard Cohen.

Joining Ryder the Eagle for an exquisite evening of entertainment at Double Whammys cabaret are Pony Baby, the heart-melting country duo of Jazmine Mary and Arahi, and our very own “Tramadol John Rowles Créme Jéan, plus a karaoke after-do for the brave.

The next night at Waihekes Artworks Theatre, its an all-ages soirée featuring the return of Teen Wolf, who charmed Waiheke locals when they opened for Shonen Knife earlier this year, and Waiheke High School band Lemoncholi, with student and adult tickets both available.
