Adam Hattaway Announces 'High Horse' Album Release Tour + Unveils Single / Video 'Good Times'

Chris Cudby / Tuesday 24th September, 2024 12:46PM

Adam Hattaway contemplates the down 'n' dirty lifestyle of an everyday ratbag in the Ōtautahi artist's new anthem 'Good Times', the second single out the gate from his just-announced latest album High Horse. Inspired by the stark mid-20th Century crime imagery of US photographer / photojournalist Arthur Fellig aka Weegee (whose work adorns the cover of Naked City's debut album), Hattaway paints a portrait of a fringe-dwelling live wire — drawling "It's not as if I'm misunderstood / Now I'm no cheap hood / But I'll hurt you / You know I would" over strung-out rock grooves. The accompanying video by Gina Johns captures the besuited Hattaway with bandmates The Haunters, busting out 'Good Times' with limb-flailing, preacher-like fervour, oscillating between classy black & white and lurid full colour.

Produced by Lyttelton icon Marlon Williams and featuring Ernie Belle on the swaggering title track, Adam Hattaway’s sixth studio long player in six years is out in full on 8th November. In their element on-stage, Hattaway and the The Haunters have announced an eight date tour marking their new musical era, playing all around Aotearoa plus two dates in Melbourne / Naarm as spring turns to summer. Press release:

Adam Hattaway has announced their new album ‘High Horse’ set for release on November 8th. Produced by Marlon Williams, today’s album announcement also comes with a new single and video ‘Good Times’.

Like many of Hattaway/Jones songs this track came in a dream and is inspired by Arthur Fellig’s crime scene photography. It’s bare, dark and gritty. Hattaway reflects, “I don’t often sing that way. Marlon got me to explore many different vocal styles throughout the album, I accessed parts of my voice that I didn't know I had.’’

This release will be Hattaway’s sixth full length album in six years. Featuring previous single ‘High Horse’, the upcoming record is significantly more stripped down than Hattaway’s earlier, noisier rock and roll ventures, with friend and collaborator Marlon Williams aiming for a sound that was “frustratingly quiet” and led by acoustic guitar. Adam explains, “I didn't know it was just going to be the four of us most of the time, so it was very hands-on.” The small group play nearly all the instruments, sharing backing vocal duties, with very little electric guitar this explores a new sound for Hattaway and Jones.

Adam and his band The Haunters will embark on an eight date tour of Aotearoa and Naarm/Melbourne including a Jon Toogood support and a slot at Sanctuary Sounds music festival.
