Strawpeople Announce Auckland Headline Show

Strawpeople Announce Auckland Headline Show

Chris Cudby / Thursday 29th August, 2024 8:48AM

The past twelve months have been something of a renaissance era for Aotearoa electronic pioneers Strawpeople, who unveiled their first new record in nearly two decades Knucklebones last August, prompting rapt reviews and rare festival performances at WOMAD and Splore. Co-founder / producer Paul Casserly has announced Strawpeople are reconvening to headline Tāmaki Makaurau's Hollywood Avondale, treating fans to highlights from a multi award-winning, seven studio album oeuvre that has been recognised with the 1995 Silver Scroll award (for 'Sweet Disorder') and seven Tūīs thus far.

Casserly will be joined onstage at the Hollywood by vocalists Fiona McDonald (Headless Chickens), Leza Corban and Stephanie Tauevihi — singers of Strawpeople hits including 'Trick With A Knife', 'Sweet Disorder' and 'Under the Milky Way' respectively — with instrumentalists Chris Van de Geer (Stellar) and Matthias Jordan. Real deal groundbreakers in local club music, electronica and trip-hop from 1990 onwards, Strawpeople's 1994 opus Broadcast finally reached streaming services just last month. So refresh your ears, get up to speed with Greg Fleming's two-part AudioCulture profile HERE and don't miss out on this very special spring event...

“WOMAD was so magical we wanted to share the love with our Auckland fans in a full show in the city’s best live venue".

Press release:

With songs from their classic albums, including Worldservice, Broadcast, Vicarious, No New Messages and 2023’s Knucklebones, strawpeople make a rare live appearance following impressive showings at Splore and Womad earlier this year.

The group bring a full length show to the Hollywood Avondale on Friday 18 October.

Featuring all the favourites from the APRA award winning Sweet Disorder, sung by Leza Corban, to Trick With A Knife, Taller Than God (Fiona McDonald) and Have A Little Faith and Under the Milky Way (Stephanie Tauevihi), this is a chance to see one of New Zealand’s favourite groundbreaking electronic acts of the 1990s playing the soundtrack of a generation, with these three legendary vocalists and producer Paul Casserly backed by top musicians including Chris Van de Geer of Stellar fame and keyboardist to the stars Matthias Jordan.

After a hiatus of 19 years the band released the album Knucklebones in 2023, becoming a live act for an RNZ performance which lead to invitations to Splore and Womad where they played to thousands of fans.
