Watch Swallow The Rat's Video For 'Small Plates'

Samantha Cheong / Thursday 22nd August, 2024 11:01AM

Swallow The Rat takes us for a night drive along Tāmaki Makaurau's Karangahape Road, where we peer at the city in the afterglow of rain, in their new visualiser for single ‘Small Plates’. From their excellent sophomore album South Locust comes a track about "the rise, the fall, and rise again" of the iconic central city strip, whose relationship with its diverse occupants can be seen as its own two-way street. The video by drummer and vocalist Hayden Fritchley guides us into a dark evening spotting neon signs and building graffiti. This Friday also sees a lemony twist on ‘Small Plates’, with a remix by Barnaby Greebles (Orbjks). The Hamilton-based artist’s mods cut just the right shapes, especially as K Rd has undergone its own remix of sorts, through major construction, gentrification and innovation which churn and waste away.

Swallow The Rat are on the mega-stacked lineup for the Going Global Presents 2024 Artist Showcases, playing deep within St Kevin's Arcade on K Road next Friday. New visualiser right now, new remix on Friday and a killer show next week...

"'Small Plates" is a reflection on [Auckland street] Karangahape Road, its gentrification, and what role Aucklanders have played in how it has changed over the years. Time has seen it go from the city's flashest shopping destination, to urban clearances of the Maori and Pasifika communities, to both a red light and artistic district, to becoming a slightly edgier version of Ponsonby Road." - Stephen Horsley
