Young Gho$t & Unwell Drop Single / Video 'Up All Evening'

Bristol-raised Pōneke rapper / producer Young Gho$t (Bad Taste) and fellow local studio wiz Unwell pay tribute to their shared roots in jungle, liquid drum & bass and trip-hop on new collaborative single 'Up All Evening', which follows their Jamma EP from April. Drawing inspiration from '90s UK breakbeat pioneers Good Looking Records and Metalheadz, 'Up All Evening' is a deeply felt homage to an era where electronica emerged from the underground to breathe with a cyborg soul.

Director Jason Park meshes together a variety of cinematic elements in the single's super stylish clip, made with support from NZ On Air. Animated line work, time-lapse / stop-motion visuals and crazy good editing frames actress / model Maia Wood, who traverses the capital to land at a warehouse rave, giving a lift to Young Gho$t and Unwell along the way. The video fits the track's lo-fi vocal samples and breakbeat bones to a tee, especially as Young Gho$t closes us out with a hopeful and confident rap verse that hits nerves —"Life on the line so I’m crossing it". Young Gho$t is soon opening for UK hip hop stars Lee Scott & Black Josh in Pōneke and Ōtautahi, plus he'll be moving the crowd at Valhalla's Warpath Wednesday II on 7th August...

"We're both huge fans of Good Looking Records and Metalheadz, and ‘Up All Evening’ was partly intended as a tribute towards this era, where it was more about the vibes and soul than anything else. We were trying to create something that pays homage to the old school but still explores the style in a fresh way.

Emotionally, the ‘Up All Evening’ video is ambiguous — it covers a range of simultaneous emotions and doesn't tell you how you're meant to feel about it any one way. Maia's performance is meant to reflect that. We can see that she's heading out to the rave, but we don't know why or what she is escaping from.
