Wiri Donna Returns With Single / Video 'The Gold'

Samantha Cheong / Friday 21st June, 2024 10:12AM

Pōneke's multi-talented Wiri Donna aka Bianca Bailey makes an explosive return with new single ‘The Gold’, honing in on such inner strength as to command flames. It was recorded at Surgery in Te Whanganui-a-Tara’s Newtown with producer James Goldsmith (who has produced for Bailey’s besties DARTZ) and the skills of Harrison Scholes (Arjuna Oakes, TOI), James MacEwan (Arjuna Oakes), and Elliott Dawson. ‘The Gold’ has been a long time coming since Wiri Donna’s 2022 debut EP Being Alone, as the songwriter has been busy sharing stages with the likes of Fontaines D.C. and Mild Orange, and playing as a member of synth-punks F.A.I.R.Y. Amongst it all, she's been attempting to grasp "what does rock music mean to me" among much smoke and mirrors.

Referencing Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ right out the gate in the lyrics, the single is a search for purpose and taking further chances. Epic guitar riffs ascend us into the powerful vocals of Bailey, who self-directs the scorching video, filmed by Sophea Nygon at her homeground of Princess Bay. Made with the support from NZ On Air, Bailey twists crimson sleeves styled by Sakura Kato far into the night, glorified and illuminated by the pyrotechnics of Sebastian Fraser during moments of the song’s chorus and thickest textures. Watch the power of fire and sea energise Wiri Donna upon her timely re-emergence into our hearts…

'The Gold' is out today on major streaming platforms.
