Sam Cullen Shares Single / Video 'The Cold Midwinter'
Invercargill-bred songwriter Sam Cullen follows his dashing ‘Forever’ single with his latest track and video bundle for ‘The Cold Midwinter’. The pop-ified rock ‘n roll anthem is about the fear of growing up, and the pub culture he was swept up in during his youth. Created by Dave Thomson of Imaginary Friends and made with the support of NZ On Air, the visuals capture his hometown’s Rugby Park Stadium where his dad worked and his grandfather was an established groundskeeper. His breath rushes out in front of him in the empty stadium, the same way the chorus surges with synth rock and vocal intensity. Recorded in his own bedroom for the most part, Ben Malone lent his recording expertise at Parachute Studios and Chris Chetland mastered the rest at KOG studio. It’s Cullen's favourite song he’s written, and a crowd-pleaser that could fill those empty stadium seats.
Cullen is set to unite a five-piece live band on a nation-spanning two-stop tour in two weeks, at Auckland’s Anthology Lounge and Invercargill’s Rocking Horse races. He’ll also be farm-ready at Southland’s Revitalize Festival in early January, grip his single release tour details below…
“This song is me down to the ground. It feels like it’s in a rush, which is what I feel like all the bloody time. It’s about my experiences as a teenager in pub culture and noticing the place that I’m from. It’s also about growing up out of your teenage years and realising your own flaws and weaknesses.”
