Tei. Drops Single / Video 'Primal'

Tāmaki Makarau's tei. is back with her eminently stylish first official single since the pre-pandemic days of 2019. Feeling like a futuristic R&B banger for haze-filled, chrome-surfaced clubs and haunted highways, the prowling grooves and crisp beats of 'Primal' were produced in collaboration with Auto Angel (formerly known as Bbgurl). Addressing themes of jealousy and relationship insecurity head-on, a beleaguered tei. hits the open road with mysterious cargo in the song's cinematic accompanying visuals, co-directed by the artist and Benji Taylor, and made with support from NZ On Air. “’Primal’ is about the jealousy and insecurity that kept occurring with an ex, where they would become extremely jealous when I was just out at the club working and performing or seeing my friends. I think it’s a mood many people have experienced, where they’re being loyal while just trying to have fun and get lit. But some people, maybe a partner, bring a heavy energy in their lives and try to bring them down. In which case, you either need to find a balance and make the most of the situation, or just escape!” — tei.
