Soft Plastics Share Single / Video 'Disembody' + Announce Debut Album 'Saturn Return'
Dropping classic tune after tune since they emerged in the apocalyptic year of 2020, Soft Plastics are moving into their next phase with today's announcement of the Te Whanganui-a-Tara trio's forthcoming debut album Saturn Return. Setting the scene is emotionally searing new single 'Disembody', melting ice cold hearts with unsentimental torch-singing elegance (recalling the vintage pop balladic moves of earlier single 'My World / Your Girl') before launching into a furious finale of distorted brain-mashing guitar heaviosity.
Directed by Stella Reid and made with support from NZ On Air, the song's beautifully shot accompanying clip stars singer / guitarist Sophie Scott-Maunder navigating a world of drama and relationship anxiety (with a nod towards Nathan Fielder's The Rehearsal), featuring a cast of characters played by Jonathan Shirley, Laura Robinson, Arlo Gibson, Ben Ashby, Jonathan Power, and Vince Neaves. Recorded and mixed by James Goldsmith, look forward to the release of Saturn Return on 31st March, and catch Soft Plastics performing just beforehand at CubaDupa 2023 — peep the tracklisting below...
"When I first heard the song I thought a lot about the out of body experience you have during a break up. There’s an inability to speak, to admit something. We practice these difficult conversations, over and over, in our head. In my line of work I’m constantly rehearsing these big dramatic scenes; yet they’re always in stark contrast to my stilted experience of these conversations. I wanted to play with this contrast — and thankfully the band were excited by this idea too.
"Disembody strikes the balance between raw emotion and humour that Soft Plastics does so well. It has playful performances, and a chance for the band to rock out. There’s still something that drives Soft Plastics songs forward — even at a slower pace, they never take their foot off the gas." — Stella Reid
"This song and video is a pretty accurate indicator of what you can expect from our debut album, Saturn Return. We're looking forward to sharing it with everyone." — Sophie Scott-Maunder
'Saturn Return' releases on 31st March, vinyl LP preorders available HERE.
