Uncontestably one of Tāmaki Makaurau's finest songwriting talents, Roy Irwin (NO-CLIP) has reemerged with their first solo release since 2021's acerbic 'The Comedian' (and 2020's self-titled album before that). Written late last year following their mother's passing in 2021, Irwin explores and reflects on the process of grief while conjuring heart-melting melodic dreaminess on 'Clover' — tackling the heaviest of themes with moving lightness and grace. We're proud to premiere 'Clover' here this morning along with Morgan Leary's beautiful video for the song, compiled and shot in a variety of everyday locations with Irwin following a conversation about their mother, as the artist explained...

"'Clover' is a song about navigating through the grief of my mother passing away in 2021. The majority of the lyrics came not long after that happened and I've struggled with songwriting until recently and recorded the song in late December of last year.

I don't think grief ever goes away but it is really about the hopelessness and disregard for being alive when things feel worthless but ultimately still wanting to push through those feelings and having the desire to be your best for others.

The video for 'Clover' was compiled and shot by my friend Morgan Leary, it was pretty last minute but I talked with Morgan about it being somewhat reflective of the person my mum was. She loved nature, simple pleasures and also had a vivid imagination and somewhat of a spiritual gift.

She kept an extensive collection of four leaf clovers she would find in books hence the name."

'Clover' is out today on major streaming services.
