Marlon Williams Shares New Album 'My Boy'
Lyttelton songwriting icon Marlon Williams (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāitai) has returned revitalised with his first solo album in four years My Boy, the follow up to his breakout / breakup 2018 opus Make Way For Love (and 2020's collaborative release with Kacy & Clayton Plastic Bouquet). Sporting eleven songs written during Aotearoa's seemingly endless lockdown months in his hometown with sound engineer / flatmate Tom Lynch, half the record was demoed with Mark ‘Merk’ Perkins before being laid down at Roundhead studios with producer Tom Healy. My Boy's cast of musical talents include drummer Paul Taylor (Feist), bassist Cass Basil (King Sweeties, Tiny Ruins), Healy on guitars and synths, plus contributions from Delaney Davidson, Dave Kahn (The Yarra Benders on the record) and Elroy Finn.
Feeling distinctly warm-hearted, open-eared and playful in spirit when compared to the dark aura surrounding Make Way For Love, Williams discussed how he incorporated the famous 'Māori strum' on My Boy in an illuminating interview with Rachel Ashby for Sunday HERE. Traversing a wide variety of emotions and musical styles on his new record, the 2022 Silver Scroll finalist will be celebrating the launch of My Boy in style with a four date nationwide tour in January — performing in some of Aotearoa's most opulent venues with bandmates The Yarra Benders at the dates below...
“There’s a lot of male shapes on the record... Growing up an only child, I had to outsource my brothers and build a world around me. So while masculinity is a big theme, it's really subsumed by broader explorations of vitality, and the social and cultural value placed on legacy.” — Marlon Williams
