Baecorp Drop Debut Album 'Joy On Tick'
New kids on the Aotearoa alt-pop bop block Baecorp brought the party and the tears with student radio chart toppers 'Can I Tick a Feeling?' and anti-consumerist culture anthem 'Pak N Gap', tidily wrapping up that winning run today with debut album Joy On Tick. The collaborative project of Sam Denne (Skody Banks, Babyteeth, UTR contributor) and singer / visual artist Nirvana Haldar, the pair's sonic vision embraces stately dream-pop, stormy shoegaze, Italo-inflected club grooves, cough syrupy blunted ambience and more — radiating on all eight tunes a love for epic guitar hooks, romantic synthetic textures and highly personal, emotionally gut-punching lyrics. Co-written by Denne and Haldar, and majestically produced by 'Depression', Joy On Tick feels akin to a surprise ray of sunshine during these endlessly drab grey winter days in Tāmaki Makaurau...
"I think the line "just keeping tempo, I've learned the steps but my heart can't feel the beat" sums it up pretty nicely. That feeling of meandering through life, keeping up appearances, knowing the right moves to make but feeling like an absolute husk. It's just one carpark to another until something gives way and you're on a t-shirt." — Sam Denne
'Joy On Tick' is out now on major streaming services.
