Listen To Welcomer's Single 'A Steely Dan Covers Band'
Te Whanganui-a-Tara "wilted pop" five-piece Welcomer follow their SRN chart-topping debut tune 'Cicadas 3' with second single ‘A Steely Dan Covers Band’, out today via Papaiti Records. Featuring Daniel McBride (Sheep Dog & Wolf) on saxophone, the new song reflects on the inevitable passing of time — centred around memories of witnessing a Steely Dan covers band of contestable quality ("hey fuck you, whatever, whatever they were good") perform in a park and a friend turning thirty.
As humorous as the lyrics can be, the ballad’s mood is nostalgically mournful. By refusing to sound like the track's namesake, main songwriter Miles Sutton perhaps suggests that memory is like a dodgy pastiche, especially when seen through rose-tinted glasses: “Well, I’ll take it. It’s only a photo, and you look good.” Even the guitar echoes the shifting swirl of remembrance, and when the brass finally enters, it fills the scene with an eerie timelessness. Welcomer are celebrating their new release next month at their hometown's Pyramid Club, joined by Mystery Waitress and shannengeorgiapetersen...
