Baby Zionov Unveils New Album 'Henrietta'
Following a sterling run of singles, Tāmaki Makaurau singer and electronic producer Baby Zionov aka Aaliyah Zionov today unveils her new album Henrietta via Aotearoa independent imprint Sunreturn. Featuring collabs with Moody V, Marika Pratley (both of Moody.V And The Menstrual Cycle), corpse-becoming-foxes and Chansey, Henrietta boasts an admirably eclectic variety of sounds and genre approaches (club-friendly and beyond) — encompassing infectious happy hardcore, vocodered space disco, 16 bit game soundtracks, bass-poppin' jazz-funk, a cover of 'Jeremy' by The Magnetic Fields and even frolicsome psych-folk on 'We Lived Alone'. Henrietta's inclusive sonic exuberance and philosophically inclined lyrics feel like a much-needed act of resistance against the oppressive forces glooming up 2022's timeline — in 'Fantasy' Zionov declares "Here in my fantasy I am taking on negotiations," and who better for the job?
"This album is a love letter to the music that brought me joy.
Music that captured my imagination in my formative years, when I was a gay teenage shut-in digging through the depths of Internet music fan blogs and communities all day. That sort of approach can be really interesting because you get all sorts of wonderful music from all walks of life dropped right in your lap, but you’re often totally disconnected from the time, place, and context it came from. You end up constructing your own narrative around it, an anachronistic little world to make it all fit together.
Henrietta is my attempt to bring that world in my head to life, with the help of my wonderful, ridiculously talented collaborators and friends." — Baby Zionov
