Listen To 'Jazz from the Underground Nightclubs of Aotearoa' Volumes 3 and 4
Providing a crucial snapshot of what we're all missing out while local venues are temporarily out of action, Tāmaki-based imprint Kiwijahzz has unveiled two superb new collections in their Jazz from the Underground Nightclubs of Aotearoa series. Volume 3 stars HatNoHatHat, the mega trio of Jeff Henderson, Paul Dyne and Rick Cranson, while volume 4 returns to the anything goes outward sounds of Trioglodyte, orbiting the core team of Henderson and Eamon Edmundsen-Wells. An interplanetary array of special guests lend their "wow"-inducing improvisational talents to the latter long player, including saxophonist J.Y. Lee, Paul Taylor on percussion/ electronics, Jonathan Crayford playing Fender Rhodes and fellow Two Farben member Julien Dyne on drums, recorded live in late 2020 during the group's ongoing residency at The Wine Cellar.
Both albums will knock your socks of in entirely different ways, encompassing traditional jazz standards, compositions by Ornette Coleman and Thelonious Monk, West African dance music, free-roaming workouts and even "radical re-imaginings of Bruce Springsteen and Jobim". Volume 4 notably leaps out the gate with the absolutely ripping 'Kanaga' and Dyne once more contributes impeccable geometric abstract painted imagery to the series artwork — listen below...
