Waterfalls Shares Single 'Balconies and Cherry Trees'

The solo project of Pōneke singer / producer Amber Johnson, Waterfalls follows her early 2021 student radio hit 'Impressionistic' with equally captivating new single 'Balconies and Cherry Trees'. Stuttering electronic textures give way to washes of cascading synthetic lushness, as Johnson's beautifully sung yet emotionally frank lyrics detail deep states of personal vulnerability. Gesturing towards happier times to come, the track is the latest release from the artist's keenly anticipated first new collection in five years, launching this coming spring — you can catch Waterfalls playing a live to air session for Ōtepoti's Radio One 91FM this Friday from 4.30pm sharp.

"This song is a vulnerable one, I wanted to instil a sense of being unable to move towards the good things of life- into a symbolic springtime (the cherry trees of the title) and remaining instead in a between state (the balcony which is a liminal space and one of romantic pining). Where I've previously used repeated phrases as incantations and have been on a self help tip and they've offered comfort or been emboldening and whatnot, here I wanted to explore in the repetition the feeling of being in a between state and cycling always backward when fear of a pain you know so well stops you from moving forward."— Amber Johnson

'Balconies and Cherry Trees' is out now via major streaming services.
