Listen To Troy Kingi's New Album 'Black Sea Golden Ladder'
Troy Kingi (Te Arawa, Ngāpuhi, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) shares Black Sea Golden Ladder, a collection of folk songs written in collaboration with award-winning, genre-spanning songwriter Delaney Davidson. This is Kingi's fifth album in his 10 10 10 Series, and marks the halfway point of his ambitious project with what he says is "the most personal of all my albums – the first one I feel that is truly about me". Black Sea Golden Ladder is different not only in style, but in how the duo crafted each track — digging deep into Kingi's memories from primary school to fatherhood over the course of just a few days, with Davidson falling into the role "somewhat of a shrink". It was also part of Pōneke's Matairangi Mahi Toi Artist Residency, which was established in 2016 specially to nurture the creative endeavours of Māori and Pasifika.
From singles 'Call My Name' and 'Sleep' you couldn't know the paths Kingi would take on the full album. He lets his voice soar in epic, expansive track 'You In My Arms', and explores folk nooks and crannies across musical metaphors for Love, The Meaning, Mortality and more. Catch these two icons in the flesh this August on the not-to-be-missed Black Sea Golden Ladder Aotearoa tour...
