Premiere: Asta Rangu & Males Share Split Single 'I Dream / Clear Lake' + Video
Back from the UK and recently spotted sharing stages with such luminaries as The Beths, Marlins Dreaming and Ha the Unclear, Richard Ley-Hamilton-led crew Asta Rangu have a new song out today as a split double A-side single with Males — who are also led by Ley-Hamilton! While each tune represents two sides of the same songwriting coin, both projects happily retain their own distinct identities. Asta Rangu's energised 'I Dream' is all urgent post-punk fuzz tumble, with needling keys amplifying the tune's barbed energy, where Males' 'Clear Lake' distinguishes itself busting out peppy power-pop hooks at an enjoyably frantic pace.
We're stoked to premiere both singles below alongside a cartoony collage clip for 'I Dream' edited by bassist Angus McBryde, to help get you in the zone for Asta Rangu and Males' celebratory split single release tour — travelling from their Ōtepoti hometown to Tāmaki Makaurau and back again this summer.
Richard Ley-Hamilton reflected on the shared qualities of both new songs: “Both songs are fundamentally about escapism. I Dream is trying to understand and quantify purpose and suffering, while Clear Lake ponders medication - what does one lose when pain is taken away? Does that which is good, potent and necessary dissolve along with the bad?”
UPDATE 1/03/21: Due to Covid-19 alert level changes, Asta Rangu & Males' Invercargill date has been cancelled. Refunds will be processed automatically back to ticket holders — please note it can take up to 7 working days to appear in their account.
