Estère Unveils Lush New Album 'Archetypes' + Video
Archetypes is a trip into the bioluminescent trenches and coves of Estère's otherworldly songwriting. Where she dips her toe into the shallows on albums Estère and My Design, On Others' Lives, on her third album she dives head first into the hazy depths of oceanic metaphors, Greek myths (which Estère delves into here), Jungian theory, and astrology. Opening track 'Into The Belly Of Capricorn' and its accompanying new video see Estère suspended in dark blue seas, twisting and turning to a song about her own star sign, unmistakably resembling a foetus in utero. Archetypes progresses through tempo peaks and troughs, giving listeners a moment to reacclimatise before picking up the pace from 'Climate In Your Skull' onwards to the body shaking synth and twinkliness of 'Nemesis'. Estère co-produced her latest collection with Massive Attack producer Stew Jackson, flitting between his base in Bristol and her own home town Pōneke - back when we could do that sort of cross-contaminating. Estère wrote about the many ideas balanced in her latest album...
"I’ve been heavily influenced by post-Jungian literature which disregards some of the archaic Jungian concepts - particularly the work of esteemed African American psychologist Fanny Brewster."
"Mish-mashing folkloric storytelling styles with more personal dialogues enabled me to really dig my teeth into each archetypal theme I wanted to explore."
Created for the festival slots in her forthcoming Aotearoa tour, the multi-talented artist has built a unique performance around Archetypes, exploring what each track means in a conceptual show called Into the Belly of Capricorn. Dates and tickets below...
