Amamelia Drops Single 'Hot Bitch Dot Zip' Feat. Baby Zionov + bb gurl
Only two weeks to go until 2020 flips from being "frankly terrible" to verifiably awesome with the launch of Amamelia's debut album WOW!, dropping in early October via plucky Aotearoa imprint Sunreturn. As if recent student radio chart-toppers 'So Good' and 'Sad and Lonely' weren't enough, the indefatigable Amelia Berry (Fimo, Babyteeth, Old Chips) has unleashed third teaser single 'Hot Bitch Dot Zip', a collaborative cut featuring guest vocalists Aaliyah Zionov aka Baby Zionov and Che Ebrahim of bb gurl. A bona fide club banger, the red hot track poses the crucial question "What's it like to suck / what's it like to be a bitch?" — a genuine enquiry it turns out, as Baby Zionov confesses later "I'm just curious / I don't really have much experience in that department". You'll be on the move to Amamelia's Wow! launch party at Whammy Backroom on 2nd October, save the date and hit play on 'Hot Bitch Dot Zip' below.
Amamelia revealed how the single emerged from Facebook Messenger chats with Baby Zionov and how Che Ebrahim came on board: "As quick as I could I whipped up a beat and Aaliyah sent me her part with the lyrics mostly cut from the back and forth of our messenger chat (“What would you think if you saw it in a shop?” was originally asking what Aaliyah thought of WOW!'s cover art ).
The beat was originally titled 'TOO FAST DISCO' and was a weird sped up deep house groove. But working off Aaliyah’s vocal it pretty quickly evolved and was influenced by the rhythmic ideas from 90s New York House, releases from Strictly Rhythm and songs tied to early Ball Culture.
I sent what we had so far and they constructed a whole extra section with a totally new beat, when the 808s come in that's all Che. I grafted their parts onto the original track."
