iiii Records Reveal 'Memory Fold Volumes 1, 2 and 3'
Stoking the flames of Aotearoa's experimental underground, iiii Records have lifted the lid on an ambitious triple album set of "conceptual improvisation" entitled Memory Fold and spearheaded by label boss Jeff Henderson. Spotlighting the boundary-defying sounds of eighteen contributing artists, including Hermione Johnson, Daniel Beban (Orchestra Of Spheres), Greg Malcolm, Chris O’Connor (The Phoenix Foundation) and many more, Memory Fold is divided neatly into three volumes — the first presenting solo clarinet recordings by Jeff Henderson, the second showcasing solos, duos, trios and quartets, and the third featuring solo piano recordings by Hermione Johnson, Jahne Kohlewaller and Sophie Sutherland. Exploring relationships between improvisation and memory, each artist was assigned the following guidelines for their Memory Fold recordings...
The music of Memory Fold presents compilations of an experiment in a simple musical/creative task.
1 – Play a short improvisation 2 – Remembering step 1, play another layer/part to the piece 3 – Remembering steps 1 and 2, player another layer/part to the piece
and a variation:
1 – Play a short improvisation 2 – Remembering step 1, attempt to play the same improvisation as step 1 3 – Remembering steps 1 and 2, attempt to play both at once
Firstly this process was performed as a daily task on solo clarinet for 3 weeks. After this ensembles were invited to perform the process as opportunities arose.
Recordings were either synced at the beginning of each take, or at the end of each take.
