Weekly Roundup: Friday 6th March
We were still buzzing about last Friday's Sleaford Mods show at Tāmaki Makaurau's The Powerstation when we hit the office on Monday morning. Moral Support's Taylor MacGregor shared his impressions on the UK electronic punk duo's thrilling Aotearoa debut in his review, accompanied by Gareth Shute's snaps of the already legendary event. Announcement highlights for the week included Philadelphian songwriting superstar (Sandy) Alex G returns to New Zealand this June for headline shows in Auckland and Wellington, Jamaican dancehall legend Sister Nancy is bringing the party to Tāmaki Makaurau's WUK It UP and a Friends & Whānau Sunday Session in Pōneke this autumn, and US death-doom legends Novembers Doom bring the fury to NZ with Australian / Japanese progressive doom virtuosos Enough to Escape this winter. Lovers of out there sonic are in for a hell of a treat – Ryosuke Kiyasu, drummer for Keiji Haino's legendary heavy psych unit Fushitsusha since 2012, will perform solo snare drum events at Tāmaki Makaurau's Audio Foundation and Pōneke's Pyramid Club this coming April, and NZ sonic visionaries Riki Gooch and Jeff Henderson are combining their boundless creative energies for a non-stop North Island tour, kicking off in late March.
Our Caught Live video for the week features Christchurch legends The Bats, headlining a special Friday night party at Hamilton's Navara Lounge with pals Matthew Bannister (Sneaky Feelings, Dribbling Darts of Love) and Bitter Defeat tonight. Aucklanders will get a chance to see them at Cross St. festival on Saturday too – experience a taste of the good stuff to come with scintillating footage of the Flying Nun pioneers playing the title track to their 2011 album Free All The Monsters in the hallowed studios of KEXP...
