US indie figureheads Sebadoh, the long-running project of Lou Barlow (co-founder of Dinosaur Jr. and The Folk Implosion) and Jason Loewenstein with drummer Bob D'Amico, are returning to Aotearoa for two crucial February headline events. Originally formed in 1988 and heroes of the nineties DIY / lo-fi guitar era, Sebadoh cemented their status with such seminal long players as Bakesale (1994), Harmacy (1996) and their 1992 compilation Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock. Back in action following fourteen years downtime (from 1999 to 2013), Sebadoh will be here touring their ninth studio album Act Surprised and promise faves from across a back catalogue spanning more than four decades. Grip the details for their North Island events below...

Press release:

Lou Barlow, Jason Lowenstein and Bob D’Amico return to New Zealand with their latest critically acclaimed album, Act Surprised - the ninth Sebadoh studio album.

“Sebadoh kicks off its fourth decade with rare cohesiveness of vision, in a string of spiky, aggressive three-minute rock songs that don't let their jagged edges obscure the throbbing heart at their center.” - NPR Music

At the live shows Sebadoh fans can look forward to a mix of tracks across their career, from classic albums like Bakesale, Harmacy and U.S No.1 Billboard New Alternative Artist Chart album Defend Yourself.

Sebadoh are now viewed as one of the most important indie bands from 1990s to today, with several of their records viewed as seminal alongside the likes of Pavement, Guided By Voices, and Superchunk. Barlow is one of America’s most influential indie songwriters. As Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth so succinctly describes: “Lou Barlow essentially invented lo-fi”.

Formed in 1986 in Westfield, Massachusetts, Sebadoh put their own compelling stamp on lo-fi indie rock, highlighted in early releases like 1990s Weed Forestin’ and 1991’s Sebadoh III. A well documented history of the band’s history including time in Dinosaur Jr and The Folk Implosion exists all over the internet, yet Sebadoh firmly command their own place in the indie history books.

With a legacy that most bands would dream of achieving, there’s no denying the fact that Sebadoh are undoubtedly indie-rock royalty. Needless to say, any self-respecting fan of the genre won’t want to miss these icons when they find themselves gearing up for their first New Zealand shows in almost six years.

“Act Surprised's high yield of killer songs hardly suffers for its absence of oddball filler.” - Mojo Magazine
