Premiere: Adam Hattaway And The Haunters Unveil Video For 'Control It'
Christchurch's Adam Hattaway The Haunters are on the precipice of releasing their second record in the span of less than 12 months, with their sophomore album Crying Lessons dropping this Friday. We've already experienced the prolific crew's swaggering latest single 'Control It', gifted to Hattaway by Lyttelton songwriting legend Delaney Davidson, and they've now unveiled an endearing new video for the song we're proud to premiere here. Collaging together vintage footage of a young Hattaway giving his all to entertain the crowd, the clip is a charming teaser for the artist's upcoming album release tour, tearing across Aotearoa over the next couple of months. Chris Cudby: Your new clip for 'Control It' shows a young Adam Hattaway taking centre stage. Would you say that "showbiz has always been in your blood”?
Adam Hattaway: Yeah man! I had a lot of enthusiasm then. I think it’s coming back!
Where did the footage come from? Were you encouraged by your parents to follow your musical dreams?
In primary school and first year of high school I forced some little kids to come watch my awful band play in the basement of the School. Other performances in that footage is from playing at youth centres, other school performances etc. Yep Dad taught me piano, introduced me to all the best old school music when I was little and both parents have always been very supportive.
You contributed to the recent Better Already - The Songs Of Al Park compilation and I've heard you've regularly played with him - would you describe Christchurch as an intergenerational musical community?
Yep, Delaney produced that record and I knew him through Al. He’s a real close friend and a mentor. Everyone plays with everyone in Chch.
What was Delaney Davidson's involvement with the song? Will he be contributing to your new album?
He wrote the song, produced the album and played guitar and organ on it!
You released All Dat Love just last December and Crying Lessons is out this Friday - where is all this music coming from?
I don’t have a job so I just bum around jamming. We got another album at least half written so it’s gonna keep on coming too!
What can audiences look forward to with your upcoming tour?
I reckon they can look forward to seeing a band writing original songs with guitars that you can dance to.
'Crying Lessons', the sophomore album from Adam Hattaway and The Haunters, is out Friday 13th September.
