Sulfate Shares Debut Single 'Speaking For Others' + Announces Tour
Peter Ruddell, singer and keyboardist of form-destroying "guitarless guitar band" Wax Chattels, has revealed the intense and dreamy first release from his brand new solo project Sulfate. 'Speaking For Others' is an assertive statement of intent, tipping the hat to the likes of slow-motion sonic pioneers Codeine and Low, opening up an ultra-heavy black hole of bone-crushing bass drones, explosive percussion and swirling distorted electric keys as a bed for Ruddell's questing vocals. Sulfate is leaping into action to play a four date tour of the North Island, with Ruddell being joined by percussionist David Harris for the occasion and support artists to be announced. Read the Taite-nominated artist's words on the origins of his single, scope out the tour dates here and experience 'Speaking For Others' below...
"This song has a long history. I wrote a demo of it while I was living in Japan in about 2014, which I rediscovered late 2018 and reworked for this project. It’s about being at the mercy of others, having to relinquish control and give in to external powers. I wanted it to try and capture the battle of trying to explain things in a language that is not your own, in a country that you are new to, and in a culture that you’re unfamiliar with. How you always feel like you’re being misunderstood, or saying the wrong thing - how it’s a trudge just to transfer meaning."

Press release:
Peter Ruddell is 1/3 of New Zealand's most well known “guitarless guitar band,” noise-rock trio Wax Chattels. He has debuted his solo project SULFATE with the cathartic single, 'Speaking For Others', and is touring around the North Island of New Zealand - performing with David Harris on Drums.
A departure of frantic and frenetic nature of Wax Chattels, Sulfate is doomy, but with strong harmonies supported by its minimal instrumentation. Heavy drums and a distorted electric piano wash throughout while Peter's ambient baritone is complemented by sparse female vocal harmonies.
