Listen To Holly Herndon's New Album 'PROTO'

US electronic innovator Holly Herndon has unveiled her future-gazing latest collection PROTO, a self-described collaboration between the artist and her "A.I. baby" named Spawn. Herndon's technologically-focussed concept manifests on the thirteen track studio album (her fifth) as a swirling collision of avant-pop choral vocals and constantly morphing, beat-driven soundscapes, conjuring sensations ranging from meditative and reflective to moments of intense emotional drama. Herndon opened up about the process involved in creating PROTO in a recent in-depth conversation with Stereogum, stating "It’s not fully automated at all, and that’s deliberate. I’m not trying to write myself out of this process. I’m trying to find a symbiotic relationship to this thing that’s — to expand a creative capacity or learn something about the performance that Spawn gives instead of trying to write myself out of the process."
