Listen To Dudley Benson's 'Cook Beleaguered' Remix Collection
Dunedin avant-pop artist Dudley Benson has unveiled the latest in a series of remix EPs, exploring the themes and sonic sensations of individual songs from his eight-years-in-the-making third studio album Zealandia, described by Benson as "twelve alternatives to the national anthem." The new collection shines the spotlight on 'Cook Beleaguered', a song reconsidering the heroic status of English navigator Captain James Cook, who first sighted Aotearoa in 1769. Along with the original track and previously featured remix by Alcs, the re-interpretations range from bombastic to contemplative to playful, with Kolya complementing the tune's powerful strings and percussion with driving electronics, Death and the Maiden constructing a balearic-tinged dance odyssey, Embedded Figures conjuring a haunting soundscape, and the enigmatic Cicada Ceremony flipping the song inside out, creating a streamlined, club-focussed dance track.
