Listen To Stef Animal's Debut Album 'Top Gear'
Wellington singer and producer Stef Animal (of fuzzed-out shoegazers The Golden Awesome) has at long last released her debut album, the fantastically titled Top Gear, after many years of tantalising single releases and live shows. The fifteen-song collection is a journey through electronic dream-pop and lo-tech cinematic synthscapes, with Stef Animal's ethereal vocals drawing listeners deep into her finely composed universe of sound. We caught up with the artist, who kindly lifted the lid on some of the mysteries behind the record. Read her words, check out a stylish promo video for the album, and listen to Top Gear below...
"Top Gear is a collection of writing/recording exercises I've been doing the last wee while. I gave myself two rules - I had to make each track in one sitting, and each track was to use only sounds from one piece of musical junk from my studio. It was a way of putting the cheap stuff i'd been compulsively buying from Trade Me to use. It was also a way of creating material quickly (I'm usually really slow and indecisive).
Wasn't sure it would cohere because of all the different sound sources but I guess my musical interests are kind of narrow, so it all sounds like it's from the same universe. It ended up sounding a bit like an eighties sci-fi kid's cartoon soundtrack? My favourite is the duck caller I think. Good noises. And it had an audio out so I could sample the quacks easily. Anyway, old cheap unfashionable stuff is cool."
