Pyramid Club is proud to present an exhibition by Ivan Mršić (Tāmaki Makaurau) - a series of new works and static projections that in turn inspire compositional reflections and improvisational live responses by members of Te Whanganui-a-Tara’s experimental music community.
Drawing inspiration from the history of graphic scores – visual representations of sound using means other than formal notation – and the shifting and illuminating relationship between images and sound, the scores are like maps, charts for sonic navigation with little or no reference for orthodox composition.
Join us at 6PM for the opening - with a live performance by Ivan and Riki Pirihi
Ivan is a prolific interdisciplinary visual artist, percussionist, composer and improviser whose long-running practice builds on the foundations of avant-garde music, performance, experimentation and art.
Ivan's improvised music practice operates on the assumption that virtually anything can become an instrument under certain conditions. This expanded understanding of sculpture, sound, music and musical instruments has guided him in his work with discarded everyday objects - the latent sonic properties of which have inspired the creation of a number of unique instruments which provide a signature sound to many of his compositions.
Ivan and his instruments are regular performers and collaborators at Vitamin S (Auckland’s weekly improvised music gathering). He is also a prolific filmmaker whose abstract video animations explore the relationship between sound and moving image and have been shown in galleries and animation festivals internationally.
He has a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, and studied percussion at the Conservatory of Music, Montreux, Switzerland.
Opening: Rāpare (Thurs) 24th April, 6-8PM
Gallery open 11am-3pm Wednesday's and at gigs
