In Queenstown for the first time we have the hottest jazz band in the nation swooping in to Sherwood's dedicated Concert Hall for an intimate session of seriously cooking live jazz. Featuring Nick Atkinson on sax (Supergroove, Hopetoun Brown). Finn Scholes on trumpet and keys (every dang band) and drummer extraordinaire Alistair Deverick (Lawrence Arabia, The Come Together Band etc). This trio will launch you on a jazz journey from Bolivia to New York via Jamaica before returning across Ethiopia and the Andes then circling for a thrumming lap of Pacific sounds.
The concert will feature tender moments spotlighting solo wind players. Horn duets will give way to shimmering percussion and a band at home charging along a winding blues highway all the way to jazz town. The room will swing from a rousing woodwind crescendo then sway to a funky knee poppin' polyrhythm all within the space of a few songs. Love Square are the trio that recently rocked the K Road Block Party. Their sets were so fierce they were immediately booked for a residency at Ponsonby Social Club and a handful of late night dates downtown last month. This is the band you want to hear, the best players around right now. You may need to man all available tambourines, castanets and shakers for this one.
Nick Atkinson is half of Hopetoun Brown and a founding member of Supergroove. His saxophone and bluesy clarinet stylings have resonated through concert halls up and down the country with Hopetoun Brown, but this time round he's here with his passion project Love Square. This trio lets Atkinson stretch out on his beloved tenor sax while still taking a watch on the piano and bass clarinet so Finn Scholes can launch fiery trumpet rockets out into the audience. Ladies and gentleman, when Finn Scholes blows his trumpet people remember! Finn's right-hand man and our courageous drummer Alistair Deverick has toured internationally with Neil Finn and he's always booked to play the big venues most weekends holding down the seat in the Come Together touring band among many others.
Please enjoy Sherwood's dedicated and intimate new concert hall. It's the perfect place to hear these instruments played by these musicians just a few feet away. You can also bring your drinks in from the bar, it's a truely lovely set up. The band can't wait to show you their new moves!
