This is the classic Sunday afternoon jazz session.... perfect for the whole family! The band kicks off at 4.30pm and we're all wrapped up by 7pm. But you don't have to go home then! The kids can run around outside while you enjoy a sundowner and a gourmet pizza from the famed Sawmill kitchen. Kids 13 and under are free entry to this show! If you haven't yet heard of one of the hottest trios anywhere, Love Square are a mini super-group made up of key members of bands like Supergroove, Hopetoun Brown, Carnivorous Plant Society, Lawrence Arabia and so many more. They also form the core of the Come Together touring band, but this is your chance to see them stretch their legs in one of the finest venues on these shaky isles. Love Square have just wound up a long, hot stint rockin' K Road's classic haunts and now they return to the nest that originally hatched the band.... it's the heavy beams and custom made stage of the Leigh Sawmill Cafe! Where else can the audience be so close to the action! You can feel the metallic swish and clunk of Finn Scholes' trumpet valves as he readies his fingers for another dazzling cadenza. The clicks and pops from Nick Atkinson's saxophone keys add a percussive layer that you can only sense in such an intimate room. Alistair Deverick has his right heel off the ground, his toes poised on the edge of his bass-drum pedal. Cymbals shimmer and wash before he detonates a booming note from his kick.
The rhythms are exotic, reeled in on fine lines from the Bolivian highlands and the head-waters of the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. Skanks from the Caribbean swim upstream past the jazz of New Orleans toward the soul of the Great Lakes. The regime of hand percussion alone reads like pirates shopping list. A guiro, three tambourines, four maraca, five golden rings, a silver triangle, christmas bells, woodblocks, a single silver triangle and lastly shakers... two hands full! There will also be three members of the saxophone family involved and you never know how many Scholes' will turn up. These shows routinely sell out so grab your stubs now to save your spot!
