For this trio Ponsonby Social Club is very much the local gig with the home-ground advantage, so to speak. Love Square band-leader Nick Atkinson used to work on his scales day after day living just along from Hopetoun Bridge while Finn Scholes grew up half way down Vermont Street. They bring in drum master Alistair Deverick to play their world-music heavy-jazz tunes with influences gathered from as far afield as the Peruvian highlands and the head-waters of the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. Expect vast amounts of horn playing and endless pulsating hand percussion. Soulful skanks and well-travelled cumbia vie for position on a set-list packed with Latin and African feels.
For these musicians Ponsonby Road is the place they cut their teeth, first playing on the street, then making plans inside the cafes before playing shows in venues now long forgotten.
