Strange News Touring and Community Garden are honestly sizzling with excitement to announce rapper, performance artist, poet and activist Mykki Blanco is set to cavort across Aotearoa with three very special live shows this March.
How many artists can claim to have collaborated with Kathleen Hanna, Arca, Michael Stipe, Madonna, Saul Williams, Blood Orange, Anohni, Ian Isiah, Cities Aviv, Ashnikko, Jónsi and even collected a cheque from Kanye West? Not many, if any, but Mykki Blanco really is that artist.
Since their first release as Mykki Blanco & The Mutant Angels in 2012 Mykki has stepped straight beyond rap’s more traditionalist corners of misogyny, homophobia and transphobia; sincerely helping lift the culture to a new era. All the while Mykki has continued moving from the heart, to new sound - without any of the confines and brackets of style or division.
First borne of a YouTube video art project inspired by Lil Kim’s ‘Kimmy Blanco’ alter-ego, Mykki has gone from posting vlogs and raps on social media, to a true poet princess, to club super-duper star - and has become quite the mellifluous Mediterranean as of late; with the release of their latest EP Postcards From Italia.
Mykki has been becoming Mykki throughout, generously blazing trails for a myriad of queer artists and listeners.
