Gig Information

Up and coming Ōtautahi/Christchurch alt-rock cultists Velveteen present their debut EP at the irreverent Space Academy. With support from nervous breakdown folk-rocker Sam Bambery and Melbourne-based shoegaze outfit Oceans.

DOORS 8pm
MUSIC FROM 8:30PM

Velveteen is the solo project of Jai Oakley. A musician and artist living in
Christchurch, New Zealand. Jai has a rich musical history which he weaves into the
fabric of his solo project. Having made his mark as an integral part of the band
Senica, Jai has emerged as a captivating solo artist, blending indie pop with shoe
gaze and 90s alternative rock. Velveteen's music carries an infectious raw energy,
emotional depth and authenticity. Velveteen delves into themes of introspection, self-
discovery, love, and the human experience.

Sam Bambery is an Ōtautahi/Christchurch based songwriter and artist, exploring his love of semi-psychedelia and sonic texture through a twisted folk-rock lens. Leaning heavily into alt-country collage with his debut album Songs About Sailors (released March 2022), Bambery has spent a deal of time since refining his sound, pulling from the rich tapestries of songwriters Damien Jurado and Angel Olsen

Oceans are a five piece shoegaze band based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. With inspirations varying from Joy Division and Slowdive to Boards of Canada and Tycho, the heart of Oceans’ sound is a dedication to experimentation and timbre, creating vast sonic landscapes inspired by ambient, new wave and 90’s shoegaze. Across Oceans’ breakthrough EP’s Come So Far, Live at Dangertone Studios and collaborative effort with UK’s self-titled Wilt, they’ve landed support from Spotify’s Just Chill and Night Shift editorial playlists, features from Beat Magazine, Backseat Mafia and Trouble Juice, and shows alongside the likes of Grazer and Allysha Joy.
